  • A Prayer of Praise

Lord God, I praise You and adore You (Psalm 69:30).  You alone are worthy of praise, for You are the Creator of all things (John 1:3).  In You all things hold together and have meaning (Colossians 1:17).  Thank You, Lord, for who You are.

I will praise the Lord my Maker with all that is within me.

Father God, how great is the love You have bestowed on me that I should be called a child of Yours. And that is what I am (1 John 3:1).  Father, You say that You rejoice over me with joy (Zephaniah 3:17), that spirit of rejoicing, joy and laughter is my heritage. Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty — emancipation from bondage, freedom. With Your grace I will walk in that liberty (2 Corinthians 3:17). I trust in You to fill my heart with joy and with the Holy Spirit (Acts 13:52).

Father, by Your grace, I join with the heavenly hosts making a joyful noise to You and serving You with gladness.  I come before Your presence with joyful singing.  Lord, I know that You are God.  It is You who made me; I am Your people and the sheep of Your pasture.  I enter into Your gates with thanksgiving.  I enter into Your courts with praise.  I bless and affectionately praise Your name.  For You are God and Your mercy and lovingkindness are everlasting.  Your faithfulness and truth endure to all generations (Psalm 100:2-5).

It is such a good thing to give thanks unto You, O Lord, and to sing praises unto Your name, O Most High.  I want always to show forth Your lovingkindness in the morning and Your faithfulness every night (Psalm 92:1-2).  Because of who You are and all You have done for me, I am able to offer the sacrifice of praise to You continually, and it is my desire to do so.  It pleases me, O Lord, to be able to give You the fruit of my lips, even praise to Your name (Hebrews 13:15).  Thank You, gracious God, for everything.

I will sing unto You; I will sing praises to You because You are my Lord God (Judges 5:3).  I praise You, Lord, according to Your righteousness; I will sing praises to Your name, O Lord Most High (Psalm 7:17).  Through Your grace I will praise Your name forever.  When I offer praises to You, dear Lord, I know I am glorifying You (Psalm 50:23).  May my mouth be filled with Your praise and honor all day long (Psalm 71:8).  I will sing of Your mercies forever.  With my mouth will I make known Your faithfulness to all generations (Psalm 89:1).

I will praise You, O Lord my God, with all my heart. I will glorify Your name forever (Psalm 86:12). I will praise Your name in song and glorify You with thanksgiving (Psalm 69:30). I will celebrate Your abundant goodness, O God, and joyfully sing of Your righteousness (Psalm 145:7). For You, O Lord, have made me glad by what You have done. I will sing for joy at the work of Your hands (Psalm 92:4).

Because Your love is better than life, my lips will glorify You, O Lord my Redeemer. I will praise You as long as I live, and in Your name I will lift up my hands. My soul will be satisfied as with the richest of foods, and with singing lips my mouth will praise You. (Psalm 63:3-5)

You, Father, faithful Lord, are gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and rich in love. You, my loving Lord, are good to all; You have compassion on all You have made. All You have made will praise You, O Lord; Your saints will extol You. (Psalm 145:8-10)

  • A Missing Ingredient

Praise God for His promises and the limitlessness of prayer.

Praising God for everything in our lives produces joy in our spirits.

I noticed the missing ingredient in my prayers had been thanksgiving.  So I spent time worshiping God for who He is and what He is.  This subject of ‘Who God Is’ covers more territory than any mortal can comprehend.  Yet even contemplating what little we do know dissolves doubts, reinforces faith, and restores joy.

What do praise and thanksgiving accomplish?  The world begins to look different.  Praise is an affirmation of a basic truth: God is good all the time.  Praise is the recognition that life – all of it – needs to be accepted with gratitude.

Kay Arthur tells us that if the Lord’s Prayer is the pattern for all prayer, then through it we can learn vital truths regarding some prerequisites for effective prayer. She says prayer begins with worship of the Father. To worship is to acknowledge His worth, to give Him the honor and reverence due Him.

At the end of the seven time periods, I, Nebuchadnezzar, looked up to heaven, and my mind came back to me; I thanked the Most High, and I praised and honored the One who lives forever, because His power lasts forever and His kingdom lasts from one generation to the next. Everyone who lives on earth is nothing compared to Him. He does whatever He wishes with the army of heaven and with those who live on earth. There is no one who can oppose Him or ask Him, “What are you doing?” (Daniel 4:34-35).

Now I, Nebuchadnezzar, will praise, honor and give glory to the King of Heaven. Everything He does is true, His ways are right, and He can humiliate those who act arrogantly (Daniel 4:37).

Who would not fear You, O King of the Nations? For this is Your rightful due. Among all the wise men of the nations and in all their kingdoms, there is none like You… My Lord is the true God; He is the living God and the everlasting King (Jeremiah 10:7, 10). From everlasting to everlasting, You are God (Psalm 90:2)!

Thus, Jesus begins by reminding us of the supremacy of the One who lives in the third heaven and controls all the affairs of the universe.

Yours, O Lord, is the greatness, the power and the glory, the victory and the majesty. For all that is in heaven and in earth is Yours. Yours is the kingdom, O Lord God, and You are exalted as head over all. Both riches and honor come from You, and You reign over all. In Your hand is power and might; in Your hand is it to make great and give strength (1 Chronicles 29:11-12).

  • Come, Let Us Worship Together

But the hour is coming and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him (John 4:23).

May my heart show compassion and my words thanksgiving; and like the rest of the universe and all creation, may my very being sing praises to our God.

Arise! Shine! For your light has come! The glory of the Lord rises upon you! (Isaiah 60:1)

God gave you the world – enjoy it.  (Max Lucado)

Because Your loving-kindness is better than life, my lips shall praise You. Thus I will bless You while I live. I will lift up my hands in Your holy name (Psalm 63:3-4).

Come, let us bow down in worship. Let us kneel before the Lord our Maker (Psalm 95:6).

Come, let us sing for joy to the Lord; Let us shout aloud to the Rock of our salvation (Psalm 95:1).

You make me glad by Your deeds, O Lord. I sing for joy at the works of Your hands (Psalm 92:4)

Satisfy us in the morning with Your unfailing love, that we may sing for joy and be glad all our day (Psalm 90:14).

Sing for joy to God our strength; shout aloud to the God of Jacob (Psalms 81:1).

Sing joyfully to the Lord, you righteous; it is fitting for the upright to praise Him (Psalm 33:1).

They will celebrate Your abundant goodness and joyfully sing of Your righteousness (Psalm 145:7).

It is good to give thanks to the Lord and to sing praises to Your name, O Most High. To declare Your loving-kindness in the morning and Your faithfulness every night (Psalm 92:1-2).

I will sing to the Lord as long as I live; I will sing praises to my God while I have my being! (Psalm 104:33)

My soul magnifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior… His mercy is on those who fear Him (Luke 1:46-47, 50).

Worship is the thank you that refuses to be silenced.

Blessed be the Lord God of Israel from everlasting to everlasting! And let all the peoples say “Amen!” (Psalm 106:48)

We will not hide them from our children; we will tell the next generation the praiseworthy deeds of the Lord, His power, and the wonders He has done! (Psalm 78:4)

Let those who take refuge in You be glad; let them ever sing for joy. Spread Your protection over them that those who love Your name may rejoice in You (Psalm 5:11).

Rejoice in the Lord always! Again I say: rejoice! (Philippians 4:4)

May my meditations be pleasing to Him as I rejoice in the Lord (Psalm 104:34).

Rejoice before the Lord your God in everything you put your hand to (Deuteronomy 12:18).

Let us rejoice and be glad and give Him glory! (Revelation 19:7)

Rejoice always! Pray without ceasing. In everything give thanks (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18).

May the Lord’s face radiate with joy because of you! (Numbers 6:25 TLB).

  • Let Us Return to Praising Him

Our task is not to try and understand the world and His plan, or even all creation; our task is but to reflect the spirit of the Creator and sing His praises.

You are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation [a people set apart]. His own special people that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light (1 Peter 2:9).

Praise and give thanks to God continually, in all ways on all days, regardless of your circumstances. (Bill Bright).

Sing to God, sing praises to His name; cast up a highway for Him who rides through [our] deserts – His name is the Lord (Psalm 68:4).

Praising God for troubles ends them. Praising God for blessings extends them.

Let God be magnified! (Psalm 70:4)

Praise be to the Lord God, the God of Israel, who alone does marvelous deeds. Praise be to His glorious name forever. May the whole earth be filled with His glory (Psalm 72:18-19).

Praise God for His solution to the problem.  Instead of focusing on yourself and your problem, focus on God’s care for you.

You have turned my mourning into dancing. You have put off my sackcloth and clothed me with gladness to the end that my glory may sing praises to You, and not be silent! O Lord my God, I will give thanks to You… (Psalm 30:11-12)

O Lord God, You have [only] begun to show Your servant Your greatness and Your mighty hand! For what God is there in heaven or on earth who can do anything like Your works and Your mighty deeds? (Deuteronomy 3:24).

Stop and consider God’s wonders!  (Job 37:14)

Delight yourself in the Lord and He shall give you the desires of your heart (Psalm 37:4).

How great are Your works, O Lord.  How profound Your thoughts!  (Psalm 92:5)

I will sing to the Lord for He has been good to me (Psalm 13:6).

How can I repay the Lord for all His goodness to me? (Psalm 116:12)

Be at rest once more, O my soul, for the Lord has been good to you (Psalm 116:7)

Are you looking for a miracle? Then open your eyes cause there’s one that happens every morning just around sunrise.

It is God alone that one takes seriously. But to take God seriously is to find joy and spontaneity in everything, for everything is a gift and a grace.

The conviction of God’s grace results in expressions of joy!

He has put a new song in my mouth: Praise to our God. Many will see it and fear and will trust in the Lord [through my praises]. (Psalm 40:3)

A merry heart does good, like medicine (Proverbs 17:22).

He who is of a merry heart has a continual feast (Proverbs 15:15).

A merry heart makes a cheerful countenance (Proverbs 15:13).

I have learned in whatever state I am to be content (Philippians 4:11).

  • We Were Made To Praise Him

Father, You say that You rejoice over me with joy (Zephaniah 3:17), that spirit of rejoicing, joy and laughter is my heritage. Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty — emancipation from bondage, freedom. I walk in that liberty (2 Corinthians 3:17). You fill my heart with joy and with the Holy Spirit (Acts 13:52).

Accept God’s gift of joy as a little child.

O the joys of those who do not follow the advice of the wicked or stand around with sinners or join with scoffers, but who delight in doing everything the Lord wants. Day and night I think about His law (Psalm 1:1-2).

Who would not fear You, O King of the Nations? For this is Your rightful due. Among all the wise men of the nations and in all their kingdoms, there is none like You… My Lord is the true God; He is the living God and the everlasting King (Jeremiah 10:7, 10). From everlasting to everlasting You are God (Psalm 90:2)!

I delight myself in my Lord Jesus, and He gives me the desires of my heart (Psalm 37:4). Whatever I do in word or deed, I do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him (Colossians 3:17). The Lord commands His loving-kindness to me in the daytime, and His song will be with me in the night — [my every breath shall be] a prayer to the God of my life (Psalm 42:8).

You, my loving God, are good to all; You have compassion on all You have made. All You have made will praise You, O Lord; Your saints will extol You. (Psalm 145:8-10)

In response to all He has done for us, let us out-do each other in being helpful and kind to each other, and in doing good (Hebrews 10:24 Phillips).

  • Thank You, God

I share with you what I found to be helpful in dealing with old hurts. This excerpt from Ruth Myers’ book, Thirty-One Days of Praise, says things better than I ever could.

Thank You, my gracious and sovereign God, that You have been with me and carried me from the day of my birth until today (Isaiah 46:3, 9-10). That You have known my whole life, from beginning to end, since before I was born and that You wrote in Your book all the days that You ordained for me before one of them came to be (Psalm 139:16). You knew my whole life before I was even born.

Thank You that in Your gracious plan to bless and use me, You’ve allowed me to go through hard times, through trials that many people go through in this fallen world (1 Corinthians 10:13; 1 Peter 5:9). How glad I am that You’re so good at reaching down and making something beautiful out of even the worst situations! How encouraged I am when I think how You did this for Joseph (Genesis 37)… how his brothers hated and abused and betrayed him, and how You worked these things out for blessings, both for Joseph and his family, and for countless others as well (Genesis 50:19-20).

I praise You that the things that happened in my past, both enjoyable and painful, are raw materials for blessings, both in my life and in the lives of others (1 Thessalonians 5:18). So I thank You for the specific family (or lack of family) into which I was born and the opportunities You did or did not provide. And thank You for the things in my past that appear to be limitations, hindrances, bad breaks… the wounds of old hurts, the unmet emotional needs, the mistakes or neglect of other people — even their cruelty to me, their abuse.

How comforting to know that in all my distresses You are distressed (Isaiah 63:9). And how I thank You, Lord Jesus, that on the cross You bore my griefs and carried my sorrows, as well as my sins (Isaiah 53:4)… that I can kneel at the cross and worship You as the One who took on Yourself all my pain and experienced it to the full. And how comforting to know that in the present, day by day, You feel with me any pain, confusion, inner bondage, or struggles that stem from my past. Thank You that all these seeming disadvantages are a backdrop for the special, unfolding plan You have in mind for me… and if my past still handicaps me, You are able to lead me to the kind of help I need.

I’m so grateful that all my past circumstances were permitted by You to make me see my need for You and prepare my heart for Your Word (Deuteronomy 8:3)… to draw me to Yourself, and to work out Your good purposes for my life (Psalm 66:10-12). I rejoice that You are the Blessed Controller of all things (1 Timothy 6:15 Phillips)– You are now, You will be throughout the future, and You always were. All my days had Your touch of love and wisdom, whether or not I can yet fully see it.

And Lord, I choose to look beyond my past and present troubles in this life — this temporary life — and fix my eyes on the unseen things that will last forever (2 Corinthians 4:17-18). I praise You for the eternal glory these things are piling up for me as I choose to trust You.
